Department Profile
Department of Food Technology was established in 1964 as twin department of Bio-Chemical Engineering and Food Technology. It offers B.Tech. Program in Chemical Technology-Food Technology. Department also offers M. Tech. & Ph. D programs in Chemical Technology with specialization in Food Technology. With the inception of Harcourt Butler Technical University, the Department of Food Technology was given separate identity for the growth and development of technically sound food technologist to serve the food industries and strengthening of R&D activities. The Department was accredited by National Board of Accreditation thrice in 2003 for three years, 2008 for three years and 2013 for three years. Department has well equipped laboratories with modern facilities to meet out the necessities of students of department. Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India) Kanpur chapter is also working in the Department.
The Department has highly qualified faculty with good number of research publications in National and International journals of high repute. The faculty of the department is involved in several research projects funding from world bank under TEQIP-III and they regularly visits regarding presentation of their research work in National and International Conferences. The Department has well established labs viz. Food Processing Laboratory, Food Microbiology and Biochemistry Lab, Food Quality Laboratory and Food Research Laboratory and equipped with decent number of laboratories equipments UV Double Beam Spectrophotometer, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), Texture Analyser, Rapid Visco-Analyzer, Computer Controlled Tray Dryer, Freeze dryer, Vacuum Dryer, Spray Dryer, Fluidized Bed Dryer, Dehumidified dryer, Rotary Vacuum Evaporator, Pasta Making Machine and Potato Chips Making Unit etc. Further, the Department has also signed MoU with reputed institutes and organizations like ICT Mumbai, NIFTEM Haryana, BIS. The placement index of students of the department is constantly improving and almost all students get jobs through campus placement or opt for higher education in institutions of repute. The Department has organized several National and International seminars, workshops, and Short courses and Expert Lectures, for continuous improvement of Students, Research Scholars and Faculty.

FUTURE PLANS
Department has the following future plans for further improvement
- The Department will take sincere efforts to involve in funded Research Projects in the emerging areas of food technology.
- The Department will organize International Conferences/Symposia in collaboration with Professional Societies and Foreign Universities.
- Industry attached research laboratories will be established to promote research-oriented projects
- Interaction with Alumni and eminent personalities from IITs, IISC, NITs etc. will be strengthened for enriching the skills of faculty and students.
- Modern Teaching Practices such as Video Lectures, Flipped Classrooms and Virtual Laboratories will be adopted with the focus on improving Self-learning, Peer learning and Collaborative learning.
- More Entrepreneurship initiatives will be taken.
- Motivational Initiatives will be enhanced to facilitate the students to participate in design contest, project display etc. and receive awards and recognitions by National/International agencies and Technical Societies.
ACADEMIC INDUSTRY NEXUS
Academia and industry share a symbiotic relationship. Academia produces graduates who are absorbed by industry. Research work in universities are taken up by the industry and turned into products and services. Industry on the other hand looks to academia for solutions to their concerns. Department of Food Technology, HBTU Kanpur focus to tailor the courses to turn out graduates whose skillset are aligned to industry requirements. Often new research topics arise out of interaction between the duos which benefit both academia and industry.
Department of Food Technology, HBTU Kanpur shares a close relationship among students, faculty members and alumina from industries. The faculty frequently provides technical updates regarding the latest industrial trends. The students are given research oriented working projects at UG level. They are motivated for paper writing, presentation in seminars, symposium, conferences etc. to develop their professional perception. The department has sculpted numerous engineers & technologists who had proved their mettle by becoming the souls and roots of various industries in the field of research in the country and abroad and are repatriating credit and fame to the department.

ICT Facilities of Food Technology Department
1. ICT enabled seminar hall
Department of Food Technology has an air conditioned seminar hall with a seating capacity of 40 persons. The seminar hall is equipped with the modern ICT facilities like projection system, computer and internet facility etc. This facility is used to hold the guest lectures, seminars and other similar activities in the department.

Department of Food Technology has a well-furnished class room with a seating capacity of 100 persons. The class room is equipped with the modern ICT facilities like projection system, interactive board, computer system, sound system etc. This class room is used for conducting the theory classes of undergraduate and post graduate students of the department.

DEPARTMENT LIBRARY
The Department Library at Department of Food Technology, HBTU Kanpur serves as a significant organ of academic activity in the Department. The Department has a rich & decent collection of books, periodicals and reports in the domain of food and allied disciplines. It also has one copy each of all B.Tech. projects, M. Tech. and PhD dissertations carried out in the department in recent years. All these cater to the needs of students and faculty. Most of the books are of recent edition with the facility of issuing these for a specified time period. The library serves to provide a clean and calm ambience conductive to long hours of study. The library opens on all working days of the Institute from 9 AM to 5:00 PM. To keep pace with the ever-expanding field of knowledge the library is being updated from time to time.
