Leather & Fashion Technology : Department Profile

The department of Leather Technology was established in the year 1978 to cater to the need of the diversifying leather industry of our country by providing skilled/trained manpower. Now in the year 2025, department has been renamed as Department of Leather and Fashion Technology to fulfill the requirement of Leather and Fashion Industry related to leather products. The department is a pioneering hub of creativity, technical expertise, and sustainable innovation. Department is upgraded with a vision to merge traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. The department nurtures professionals who can lead the global leather and fashion industry with confidence, competence, and conscience.

Our department bridges the gap between engineering and design, focusing on the development of eco-friendly materials, cutting-edge and green manufacturing technologies, and trendsetting fashion solutions related to leather products. The department offers academically rigorous, industry-aligned four-year B. Tech program in Leather and Fashion Technology that emphasize both scientific understanding and creative expression. Department is also offering Research Program (PhD) to promote research as well as innovation in the core area. The department has well equipped State of the Art laboratories with most of the modern facilities to meet out the experimental necessities of the programs.

The mission of the Department of Chemical Technology- Leather & Fashion Technology are:

M1: To achieve academic excellence and practical knowledge in the fields of Leather, Leather Application, and allied areas.

M2: To inculcate technical competence in students for formulation, manufacture and application of advanced Leather with eco -friendly and sustainable approach.

M3: To develop state-of-art facilities for testing and consultancy for industry to make the department a center of excellence in the field of Leather & Fashion at global level.

M4: To develop indigenous and adaptable technologies related to Leather and Leather fashion for small scale production and to develop entrepreneurial skills, towards betterment of society.

M5: To cultivate strong ethical values to be a successful professional and to become life – long learn

The department is connected to the local leather industry of Kanpur as well as other places like Kolkata, Jalandhar, Agra etc,. The students qualify GATE , GRE, CAT, Civil services etc,. regularly.

Micro Biology lab

Trinocular microscope with photographic arrangements, Autoclave, Student Microscope, Stage Micrometer, Centrifuge, Colony Counter Owen, Humidity Owen, Thermostatic Batch, Incubator, Paraffin Embedding Bath, Refrigerator.

Analytical Chemistry Lab

Mechanical shaker, Soxhlet apparatus, Rotaryshack, Vacuum Owen with Vacuum pump, UV-vis spectrophotometer, Electronic Weighing machine.

Leather Processing Lab

Fluffing Machine, Toggle Drier, Setting Machine, Buffing Machine, Spray Booth, Experimental Drum, Tannery Shaving Machine, Hydraulic Press.

Instrumentation Lab

PH Meter, Dissolved Oxygen Meter, Photoelectric Calorimeter, Spectrophotometer, Conductivity Meter, Tintometer Flame Photometer, Densitometer, Digital Conductivity Meter.

Physical Testing Lab

Abrasion Tester, Bursting Strength, Tester Crock Meter, Flexometer, Penetrometer, Tensile Testing Machine.

Facilities

The department has physical testing laboratory, chemical testing laboratory,microbiology laboratory, computer facilities and Leather processing workshop. All the laboratories have most of the required equipments for efficient conduction of laboratory practicals for the undergraduate students.
