Message From Workshop Superintendent

Welcome to the Central Workshop, HBTU Kanpur. The Central Workshop of Harcourt Butler Technical University, Kanpur is a key academic and technical support unit that contributes significantly to Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and practical skill development of engineering students. The workshop facilitates structured hands-on training aligned with the curriculum requirements of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The Central Workshop is equipped with facilities for Fitting, Machining, Welding, Carpentry, Foundry, Sheet metal, and Black smithy practices, enabling students to acquire essential psychomotor skills, safety awareness, and professional work ethics. These activities directly support the attainment of Program Outcomes (POs) such as engineering knowledge, problem analysis, modern tool usage, teamwork, and adherence to safety standards.

The workshop also provides continuous support for laboratory maintenance, student projects, research activities, and interdepartmental requirements. Emphasis is laid on standard operating procedures, safety protocols, cleanliness, record maintenance, and systematic utilization of resources, in line with University guidelines.

Continuous improvement through infrastructure upgradation, staff skill enhancement, and effective utilization of workshop resources remains our priority. The Central Workshop is committed to supporting the University’s mission of producing technically competent, ethical, and industry-ready graduates.

I extend my best wishes to all students and staff members and encourage them to utilize the Central Workshop facilities responsibly and effectively for academic excellence.

Best Wishes

About The Central Workshop

Foundation stone of workshop has been laid on 20.10.1954 by Pt. G.B.Pant, Chief Minister of U.P. The construction of entire building has been done by Public Works Department U.P. in 1955. The department started its functioning from the year 1955-56, only for Chemical engineering, Oil & Paint Technology stream.

Central Workshop is one of the pivoting units of the institute which teaches conceptually “how” a product comes to its present form by way of imparting core manufacturing education to all the first-year students of HBTU Kanpur.  It also provides product manufacturing support to the entire institute community in general and undergraduate students in particular.

More than 1000 undergraduate students in their first year acquire hands-on manufacturing skills in the Central Workshop. The Central Workshop not only introduces art and science of manufacturing but infuses confidence to take up product design and manufacturing activities in future. Central Workshop is also a place where B.Tech. students of Mechanical Engineering acquire training and knowledge in specialized areas of manufacturing.

Vision
